An Oasis
in the Desert
Arivaca, Arizona is one of the most unique places on the planet as it lies within the fabled Sonoran Desert Grasslands. It is surrounded by several mountain ranges and is nestled in grasslands punctuated by imposing mesquite trees. Through the center of the valley flows the Arivaca River providing life to hundreds of species of birds and animals.
Arivaca is itself a unique town and boasts the claim that it is the longest continuously inhabited town in Arizona. It's history goes back hundreds of years as a native American settlement, then as a ranching community, invaded by "hippies" in the Seventies, to its present mix of all of the above plus something more. The people of Arivaca stand together and the sense of community is strong. All are welcomed.
The Birdhouse lies in the center of all of this. It is an oasis within an oasis. Within walking distance of the Red Rooster Cafe and the Arivaca Community Center, it is hidden from the road and surrounded by towering mesquite trees. It is so quiet that you can hear the wings of the hummingbirds at the feeders while the breezes blow through the covered walkway. The temperatures mostly fall in that perfect spot between too hot and too cold and most mornings you can comfortably sit outside and watch the sun rise over the nearby mountains.
The Birdhouse lodging is large and spacious, like the desert itself. With 2800 square feet and only three rooms, there is plenty of space to spread out and feel at home. Gadsden Coffee, which specializes in small-batch craft roasting, has it's roasting facilities nearby and provides your morning coffee. The taste is incredible! With the homey Red Rooster Cafe within walking distance, a great morning breakfast is readily available and if you prefer to prepare your own breakfast, our kitchen facilities are available for your use. We offer a unique bed & breakfast experience.
Your hosts, Chris and Sara, live and work onsite and are readily available. Sara is a watercolorist and her work can be seen at www.saramathewson.com. Chris is a web designer and in addition to this web site, samples of his work can be seen at www.chrisobyrne.com.
We look forward to meeting you and providing you with a quiet retreat and a new home!
